What is Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste?

Hydroxyapatite toothpaste is a toothpaste containing the mineral hydroxyapatite rather than fluoride which is used in traditional toothpaste. Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a form of calcium that makes up 95% of your tooth enamel, and 70% of the dentine layer underneath. It is the hydroxyapatite mineral that gives your teeth their hard and strong qualities, so when you use hydroxyapatite toothpaste, you are replacing the lost mineral with what is meant to be there.

The hydroxyapatite we use in our toothpaste formulations is a spherical micro-hydroxyapatite crystal. Micro-hydroxyapatite is the most similar form of hydroxyapatite to the form which makes up your tooth structure. We use a very pure and high quality hydroxyapatite at 5% in our toothpaste, following our suppliers recommendations. Lab tests have shown that it is very effective at re-mineralising your teeth and hardening the surface enamel, preventing tooth decay.

Our hydroxyapatite supplier tests for arsenic, lead and cadmium, down to a detectable level of 1ppm, so we know that our hydroxyapatite is not only high quality, but also free from any contaminants.

Why use Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste?

Hydroxyapatite is a naturally occurring mineral in the body, it is completely safe and non-toxic. By using a toothpaste that utilises hydroxyapatite, you are helping your teeth remineralise with what is meant to be there, making them healthy and strong. Teeth demineralise when you eat or drink sugary or acidic foods, so taking the chance to remineralise your teeth (replacing that lost mineral) when you brush is really important. This action of replenishing your mineral prevents tooth decay and reduces your chance of needing fillings.

Do dentists recommend hydroxyapatite toothpaste?

Yes, dentists do recommend hydroxyapatite toothpaste. In fact, Dimples Toothpaste was founded by dentist Dr Pippa Nicholls BDS after years of research and development.
When choosing a toothpaste, the most important thing in a dentist’s opinion is that there is a remineralising ingredient. This means there is an ingredient in the toothpaste that actively prevents tooth decay and replaces the mineral on the surface of your teeth to help strengthen your enamel. Hydroxyapatite serves this function and has been scientifically proven to help remineralise early lesions.

Hydroxyapatite toothpaste vs fluoride which is better?

Fluoride is the ingredient that is used in traditional toothpastes to remineralise and strengthen your teeth. As it is not a normal constituent of your tooth structure, some people wish to avoid it and use hydroxyapatite instead, which is the mineral that your teeth are made from naturally. There have been lots of studies performed to show that hydroxyapatite is as effective as fluoride in remineralising and protecting your teeth. Hydroxyapatite is completely natural and non-toxic, so is a safe and effective alternative if you are wanting to avoid fluoride.
